UPSA-IERPP holds 2025 Post-Budget Dialogue

The Faculty of Accounting and Finance (FAF) at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), in collaboration with the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP), has organised a post-budget dialogue to analyse the 2025 national budget and propose practical solutions to the government.

The event, held on March 14, 2025, brought together experts, policymakers, and academics to critically assess the budget and its implications for Ghana’s economic development.

The Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Prof. Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, in his keynote address, advised participants to eschew the usual politics of comparison and speak truth to power.

He encouraged them to offer well-grounded recommendations that would help the government address the country’s economic challenges.

Chairing the event, Prof. Joseph Tuffour advised Ghanaians to manage their expectations regarding economic policies and reforms, stressing the importance of realistic approaches to addressing fiscal challenges.

Dean of FAF, Prof Isaac Boadi, who delivered a key presentation on the topic “SOE Privatisation in Ghana: A Revenue Mobilisation Strategy,” cautioned against the wholesale privatisation of SOEs by the government.

He stressed on the need for careful evaluation of each SOE before considering privatisation as a strategy for revenue mobilisation.

“Privatisation can rescue SOEs in competitive sectors needing capital and expertise, but it is not a universal fix,” Prof. Boadi warned.

The UPSA-IERPP post-budget dialogue was themed “Unpacking the 2025 Budget: Implications for Economic Stability and Growth.”

While participants at the forum commended the government for the budget and its promises, they urged the Ministry of Finance to find innovative ways to block the revenue gap that has been created as a result of the plan to abolish certain key taxes.
